focus2 opened for business February 1, 1990. Two designers (hence the 2) and an intern squeezed into a 450 sq. foot-space in the Deep Ellum district of Dallas. We had one Mac II with a 20MB hard drive (that we shared), a printer, a fax machine, and used furnishings - all bought on credit. The copier was in the hall. We shared it with other tenants. focus2 had 2 clients.
The “focus” in the name had an idealistic meaning, but at the time we joked that it meant we were focused on paying the rent. Long story short, we did. We succeeded in winning client after new client and helped grow their brands, along with growing focus2. We won design awards (lots of them) and had our work showcased in leading trade and professional publications. We expanded, we moved, we added, subtracted, multiplied and divided.
While focus2 occupies more comfortable quarters today, we look back in awe at how much change we’ve experienced, but how little we’ve changed from our original mission of doing great work for great clients.
